We know that talking about money can be hard. Opening up about salaries, savings or planning for the future can make a lot of us feel awkward, impolite or even judged. But sometimes, even a small conversation can help. It can take away some of the pressure and even make things feel easier to navigate.
In fact, our research* found that three in ten Brits aren’t comfortable talking about money.
15% of us would rather deep clean the oven than have an in-depth chat about money.
Often, partners and spouses are the people we find it hardest to talk about money with.
But the truth is, people who talk about money tend to feel more confident managing it.
More than half the people we spoke to believed talking about money more would help them make better financial decisions.
We found people who talk openly about money tend to have twice as much cash in savings as those who don’t (£7,500 vs. £3,750).
And people who are open to chatting about money are more likely to shop around for better deals.
Because the more money conversations you have, the easier it becomes. And the more your financial confidence will grow.
Talking about money doesn’t have to mean having a difficult financial heart-to-heart. Sometimes, even a simple or fun question can be enough to get the conversation started.
Next time you’re with friends or family, why not try asking:
You never know where the conversation might lead. You could pick up a handy money-saving tip, discover a new way of thinking about your finances, or simply feel a little more confident talking about money.
So why not have a natter and see where the conversation takes you?
We think talking about money should be open and transparent. Just like banking.
